Week 15: My Father's World K - Unit 11: Insect

It was a very Texas weather week in Texas. Earlier this week we had temperatures that got as high as 80 degrees. Then we ended our week with a nice snow/ice fall. Blue Rock got to play at the park in the sunshine and in the snowy ice.

We are on Unit 11: Insect of My Father's World Kindergarten. This unit includes doing an ant farm. I sent off for the ants several weeks ago but we still haven't received them. Therefore, we took this week slow and hopefully will receive them next week and we can study our ants portion.  We'll finish up this unit next week. Overall we had another fun week.

Verse: Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord and not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Colossians 3:23-24 (NIV).

Character trait: I am a wise child, so I work hard.

Monday: We started our day off with Blue Rock picking a Christmas book from under our Christmas tree. He picked ADVENTure in Christmas and we learned why we have certain things during Christmas such as the Christmas tree, wreaths, and ornaments. Then he did his picture card page and several pages from Developing the Early Learner 2. He played with his MindWare Imaginets for a good amount of time. We ate lunch with my husband and went grocery shopping and then went to the park for a play date with one of our homeschool groups. Sadly, we went to the wrong park. However, there were so many kids there that he found plenty to play with and had a lot of fun.

He fed seagulls, ducks, and geese at the pond at the park

Tuesday: Today was the day we were supposed to start the ant farm. Since we don't have the ants, our day was rather short. He did his handwriting page and sound discrimination page. He also wanted to paint so he painted a picture all black. I asked what he painted and he said the night sky.

Wednesday: He found some foam alphabet letters a while back and has been wanting to open them. I finally let him open them today. He's loved making words and playing with them all week. Overall he's getting really good at sounding words out and trying to put words together on his own. He put together wun and proudly showed me. He said, "w-u-n spells 'one'"! I had to explain that you spell one, o-n-e. He asked, "oh, does 'o' say 'wh?' At Target he saw the word ICE and tried sounding that out. Again it was a word that you can't sound out. I told him that was a vowel consonant vowel word and so the first vowel says it's name and the second one is silent. Also the "c" in ice says "sss" as we've learned many letters make more than one sound. He's picking it up but learning how to read the English language can be a bit tricky. He's doing great, though. Especially since he's only 4. I just love that he has a strong desire to learn to read. By the way, I downloaded a few sight word apps on the Kindle and he's picked them up extremely fast! He wants to play the sight word games daily which is great practice.

Working on his math page

Cutting and pasting words

He got all of his words right again this week. He does this on his own without any help!

Painting a blue ladybug because why can't ladybugs be blue?

We also put out some of our Christmas lights
Thursday: I didn't take pictures of everything we did today. We learned about bees and honeycombs. We tasted honey and talked about Psalm 19:7-10 and God's rules being sweeter than honey. I drew a picture of a honeycomb. We read The Bee Tree, he made an insect magnet, he did some tracing activities, and wanted to paint again so he painted a green ladybug today.

Friday: It snowed and iced over last night. So today we spent a lot of time outside, at least the boys did. I was out there about 20 minutes watching and taking pictures. I'm so thankful that my husband doesn't have a job that puts him in danger in bad weather. We were supposed to go to an awesome ranch this weekend for Thanksmas with some of our church friends but that has been cancelled or postponed due to the icy roads. We didn't really do any school work today but rather enjoyed time together as a family. He did want to paint so he got to do that.
