1st Team Sports

It's always tough to decide which sports and activities to let your child get involved in. Blue Rock's first sport was gymnastics which he started in Germany with an Mommy and Me class. He's always loved gymnastics but hasn't been in it since last summer. Last spring he took swimming lessons. Then this past Fall he started playing tennis off and on when the weather was nice. He had fun with that too. We thought this year he was finally old enough to play a team sport. We try and limit his sports to one sport at a time. He really wanted to play basketball last year but we thought he was a little young. Honestly, four is still a little young for basketball. Overall he had a great time and that is really the most important thing.  I'm happy to say that our little Princess made it to his last basketball game and first soccer game. She mostly slept but she made it.

Blue Rock's last basketball game of the season was Saturday. His team was the Leopards. He played through a Christian organization called Upwards. We really liked the atmosphere and think it's a great organization to play sports though. Most of the kids on his team he's friends with from church. Two of our friends were his coaches. I think he was a little young to play this sport, although he said he always had fun and loved practicing at home. He'd start off paying attention but as a game or practice went on, it was clear he would prefer to run around with one of his friends who is also 4. His other friends on the team are 6. The 5 and 6 year olds for the most part stayed engaged in the game and could for the most part make a basket on their own.  He's been practicing dribbling at home and anytime our neighbors across the street are outside playing basketball he asks to go play with them. They are 8 and 13 and always really kind to to him. The end of the season program was Thursday night. The kids got a trophy and saw a Christian magician. It was neat.

Blue Rock's first soccer game was also Saturday. His team is the Falcons. He's playing with some more of his friends from church. Thankfully our church has a lot of boys in his age range and different dads from church volunteer to coach. His team played against one of the attorney's son's I used to work with. Small world. I think we're going to have more success with soccer. During warm up he easily kicked the ball into the goal. During the game, he mostly chased the ball along with the other kids. I think he'll get the hang of it quickly. It looks like we're starting to join the other parents who give up their Saturday mornings to watch and cheer on their little athletes. Parenthood is fun!
