Week 8: My Father's World K and Sonlight P4/5

This week was fun and busy!  Since I'm so late posting this, I'm not going to give a long overview of what we did. 

Verse of the week: Matthew 6:33, "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

Monday: This morning I had a baby doctor's appointment (the baby looks great!) and since my husband is on furlough due to the government shutdown, he stayed home and taught Blue Rock this morning.  This was the first time he's been able to teach him and so I gave some instructions and let them have it! :)  I snapped a few pictures before I left for my appointment.  We started Unit 6: Nest, of My Father's World Kindergarten.  However, since last week we skipped a few days, we finished our apple unit later in the day by making an Apple Pie.  Blue Rock and I made this together and were able to share it not only with daddy but his granddad who loves apple pie as well.

Tuesday: The nice thing about homeschooling is you can add fun games and projects when ever you want.  Blue Rock has enjoyed playing different games for a while and one of his favorite's is the Busy, Busy Airport Game. All players get an airplane and you take passengers to different destinations. My awesome and brilliant husband created a science experiment to go along with airplanes with Blue Rock involving balloons.  He taught him and showed him how air power from balloons can fly a paper airplane and push a car.  Blue Rock loved it!  Balloons and things that fly or move along the ground are both great combinations.  Today's other activities included painting a tree with apples on it.  In the evening we spent a good amount of time in the backyard.  The weather in Texas is so nice right now that we could spend most of the day out.  Blue Rock went to water our plants, he jumped on the trampoline some, Mr. joined him for part of it, we sat on our hammocks chairs from Mexico, and enjoyed time as a family.

Wednesday: Today was handwriting day. I don't always write about our "challenges." While most of the time homeschooling goes pretty smoothly, when we practice handwriting I get some resistance.  It can also take a while for him to finish one page.  I don't push handwriting at this age but we do a little every week. By a little I mean a page or two. The thing is, Blue Rock does a pretty good job overall writing. But it's challenging. He wants to write much bigger than what is on the lined paper. He tends to want to goof around rather than just finish the page. I'm pretty flexible, if he needs to run off some energy and come back, he's welcome to.  However, once we've started he has to finish.  Thankfully our next activity involved coloring and cutting out pieces for a game.  Blue Rock loves cutting so I try and have some incentive to combat the dreaded handwriting.  Sometimes he likes coloring, sometimes not.  If he didn't have to practice handwriting, coloring would be fine.  Overall we got through it.  I wanted to post a few pictures of his new furniture.  We bought a full size navy blue bed for him along with a new dresser and chest of drawers.  He was borrowing his uncle's old furniture until we found something we wanted for him.  We considered bunk beds but opted for a full size bed since he'll most likely be a pretty tall kid.  He loves his new big bed and likes having a mirror in his room.  This evening we skipped tennis because he had a cooking class.  Come to find out, he could have done both.  It may have been too much for him so I'm trying to decide on a good day for cooking class also it ran so late we missed church.

Thursday: This morning we did school work then met up with our friends for his science co-op.  They saw raisins jump in a mixture of water and vinegar.  The kids took turns adding baking soda and loved it!  Afterward we all headed to the park for a picnic and free play.

Friday: Today we took a field trip to Austin. You can read about our awesome trip here, where we visited the State Capitol, watched bats take off at sunset, and visited friends.
