Week 25: My Father's World K - Unit 21: Butterfly

We are finishing up Unit 21: Butterfly - God can make me new, of My Father's World Kindergarten. We got our caterpillars in the mail on May 13th and let them go on May 28th.  Blue Rock thought it was so cool to watch his 5 caterpillars form into chrysalis, and then emerge into butterflies. He did this at his Preschool but it was fun to get to watch them every day. We even saw some of them break out of their chrysalis.

Verse: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV

We're starting to make change as part of our curriculum. This week I started giving Blue Rock a penny each day and having him write the amount in his cup. So 1 penny he would write 1 cent (with the cent mark). After he has 5 pennies, I give him a nickle. He prefers to just play with the coins but seems to have picked up the concept pretty quickly.

We watched our butterflies emerge and Blue Rock set them free. We did some other fun butterfly crafts as well.  Blue Rock even did some creative play that he came up with on his own. He took my yoga mat and crawled over to it pretending to be a caterpillar. Then he wrapped himself up into a chrysalis, then he broke out of it and flew away as a butterfly. He loved doing this and probably did it about 25 times or more!

Most of the pictures are from our caterpillar/butterfly experience. We also enjoyed some playdates with some friends. I need to get better at taking pictures of some of our playdates.

Week 23 & 24: My Father's World K - Units 19 and 20

Life has been pretty busy lately, isn't it always?  I've been meaning to write this post for a few weeks. I'm actually going to post pictures from the past two units. We've been busy wrapping up the rest of My Father's World. Although Blue Rock is getting pretty bored with it at this point. For the most part I'm just having him go through he worksheets once or twice a week, do some Explode the Code, and practice his reading. Most of My Father's World Kindergarten he was already familiar with before we started last Fall. However, I love the way the Bible is woven throughout the curriculum and I thought it would be a good review and gentle way to ease into homeschooling. Overall we've had fun and there are still some fun experiments he's enjoying. I'm torn about what to do for next year. More on that later.

We got our caterpillars and let them go yesterday. I'll do a post on that soon. Here's a short overview of some things we did and talked about these past few weeks.

Unit 19: Rock - I listen and obey; I build my life on the Rock
Memory Verse: Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. James 1:22 NIV

Unit 20: Jewel -

Hubby and Blue Rock built a sandbox, we are watching caterpillars turn into butterflies, we've done some lava experiments, and I've enjoyed seeing creative things Blue Rock has come up with. We've also attended a few birthday parties, met with friends at the park, had friends over to play, gone to friend's houses and continue to stay pretty busy.

As part of the rock theme, we did a volcano kit I had bought last Fall. He loved the red lava. Princess thought it was neat too. We read Matthew 7:24-27 and talked about the wise man building his house upon a rock and the foolish one building his house upon the sand and why the wise man's house stayed and didn't crumble to the ground. We read the book Stone Soup by Marcia Brown. He really liked it. I'm so glad he's starting to get more interested in books that don't have as many pictures. He built towers with blocks and towers with rocks.

Some things with jewels involved me really showing him my wedding ring and the diamonds on it and explaining to him that many men in the United States give a diamond to the woman they want to marry and how one day he'll pick out a ring for his wife. He asked who he was going to marry and asked if it was his sister to his cousin to different friends.

Most of these pictures are from fun time with friends. He's getting kind of funny about having his picture taken when doing his school work. Sometimes I just leave my phone/camera in our charge station area so we can focus on school work.
